RECIPES
Once a person has decided to pay better attention to how good for them the things they are eating are, they come to the conclusion that they need to prepare most, if not all, of their food themselves. This is because there are very few healthy choices out there in restaurant-land. Dining out once in a while is a great thing, but trying to eke out a healthy diet from fast food places is difficult if not impossible.
Therefore, it’s important to be able to find recipes that taste good, that you can cook yourself, that don’t take too much time, that are good for you. If you are having trouble managing your life well enough to have the time and kitchen space to cook every day, check out FlyLady. She has an excellent system that will help you organize your house and the rest of your life.
On the web, there are several great recipe sites. My favorite is the COOKING LIGHT t website http://www.cookinglight.com/cooking/. They offer a recipe database searchable by ingredient or recipe title, an enhanced search, a way to browse recipes or menus, and a customizable place to create your own cookbooks, favorite menus and shopping lists. They explain how to cook good food, offer help with menus and planning, and makeover favorite recipes to make them better for you. They offer tips for a healthy lifestyle.
EATING WELL has another good recipe site. Go to www.eatingwell.com to check it out. They DO tend to emphasize “weight loss” rather than healthy lifestyle, but you can just accept that and go on. Also, this site has more commercial sponsors than Cooking Light. You can do an advanced search at Eating Well and search for recipes under Health and Diet considerations (like heart healthy, diabetes appropriate, etc.), Other Considerations (Vegetarian, Make-Ahead, etc.) or by Main Ingredient. They have articles about nutrition, Healthy Diet and Weight Loss, Diabetes and Nutrition Tools. They also offer information about Eat and Drink (Kitchen Tips and Techniques, Fresh and In Season, Ingredients, Drink, and What’s Hot) New and Views (Special Reports, Nutrition News, Food News, Opinion and Food Court), Community (Bulletin Boards, Kitchen to Kitchen), a section for Professionals and a place to Shop.
AMERICAN INSTITUTE FOR CANCER RESEARCH website has a page for foods that are healthy and help reduce cancer. http://www.aicr.org/site/PageServer?pagename=dc_rc_home They offer recipes for appetizers, beverages, breads, breakfast, soup, salad, entrée, veggies, pasta/rice and dessert. The rest of their site has information about the link between diet and cancer, foods that fight cancer, a nutrition hotline, and information about obesity and overweight. They also feature the new American Plate, which suggest that a healthy meal consists of a plate that is 2/3 (or more) vegetables, fruits, whole grains or beans and 1/3 (or less) animal protein. They offer suggestions on how to create meals using the “new American plate” and offer a free newsletter.
