FootePath to Fighting PCOS
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. You've been diagnosed with it, and now you face the daunting task of trying to be as healthy as you can. You know that you have increased risk for Type II Diabetes, heart disease, and endometrial cancer. Additionally, you may be facing hirsutism and uncontrollable weight gain in addition to raging hormones and uncontrollable periods, or no periods at all.
Sometimes dealing with PCOS can be overwhelming.
Our doctors prescribe medications to treat our symptoms, and suggest things we can do to be as healthy as possible. Soon, you notice a theme. The dreaded phrase "Diet and Exercise” occurs over and over. Chances are you've tried diet and exercise before, with varying degrees of success. So you look at your options, and none of them thrill you.
Usually, when someone decides to start moving more, they go to the gym or they walk. FootePath would like to help you get moving with a safe, easy exercise that uses ninety percent (90%) of the muscles in your body, and is as easy as walking. In fact, it IS walking, only smarter -- it's Nordic Walking.
Nordic Walking is walking with specially designed poles that allow you to involve 90% of all the muscles of your body in one, simple-to-learn fitness activity. Nordic Walking develops greater overall strength, improves cardio vascular function, increases caloric use by up to 40% over regular walking, and it is fun to do!
The founders of FootePath, Elizabeth Foote and Donna Mirabile, both suffer from PCOS. Elizabeth was diagnosed when she was in her early 30's, and Donna was diagnosed when she was in her late 20's. About two years ago, they discovered Nordic Walking. In March, they had the opportunity to be trained as official Nordic Walking Instructors by the LEKI corporation, which is the company that manufactures the poles they use. FootePath was founded with the intention of sharing Nordic Walking with women (and men, too) like Elizabeth and Donna, who face a whole host of health challenges but aren’t really comfortable with “traditional” fitness plans and activities.
We invite you to join us and learn this great fitness activity which can help make you healthier. Check out our class schedule for times.
